How to avoid car-cyclist collisions

London offers beautiful paved paths for scenic rides, perfect for getting around the city. But sometimes, you need to take to the streets to reach your destination.

This is where caution is key. Car-cyclist collisions can be devastating for cyclists, causing severe or even life-threatening injuries.

Here’s how we can all prevent such tragedies.

Motorists

  • Check your speed. This study led by Western University found motorist speed is a key factor in whether a cyclist is seriously injured in a crash with a vehicle.
  • Give cyclists space. The law requires at least one meter of separation when passing a cyclist.
  • Check your mirrors and blind spots before turning or opening your door. “Dooring” accidents can cause serious injuries for cyclists.
  • Be aware of cyclists, especially at intersections. They may be harder to see than other vehicles.

Cyclists

  • Follow the rules of the road. Use hand signals, obey traffic lights, and ride predictably.
  • Be visible. Wear bright clothing and reflective gear, especially at night.
  • Maintain a safe distance from parked cars to avoid dooring accidents.

Remember, everyone shares the road. By following these safety tips, we can all enjoy cycling and minimize the risk of accidents.

If you’ve been injured in a car-bicycle collision, we can help you understand your rights for compensation to help with your rehabilitation.
