Harrison Pensa is currently recruiting for a Paralegal (18-month contract, full-time) to support our Integrated Recovery Services department. We are seeking a candidate who is self-driven and motivated and can also thrive in a high-volume and fast-paced environment.
Integrated Recovery Services oversees matters pertaining to highly specialized Creditors’ Rights and is responsible for high-volume commercial and consumer debt recovery legal work.
Responsibilities
- Handle Small Claims Court Litigation, including settlement conferences, motions, trials, Judgment Enforcements and Subrogation;
- Prepare drafting of pleadings, affidavits, court forms, memos, correspondence, etc.;
- Drafting of complex motions for Superior Court;
- Research and interpret legal procedures, statutes, and regulations applicable to the practice area;
- Pre-settlement negotiations with respective parties once the file is defended;
- Ability to produce high-quality work under strict timelines and limitation periods;
- Communicating to internal and external parties regarding ongoing file management;
- Arrange for service and filing of court documents;
- General file management procedures;
- Assist other lawyers and staff within the practice group when necessary;
- Other duties as required.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary in Paralegal, Law Clerk Diploma or related discipline;
- 1-3 years of experience;
- Experience attending settlement conferences is an asset;
- Understanding of the Civil Litigation process including the Ontario Rules of Civil Procedure;
- Excellent organizational, attention to detail and time-management skills;
- Demonstrated ability to work in fast-paced environment, adjust to changing priorities, and multi-tasking skills;
- Ability to work as a team player and independently;
- Efficient self-starter and quick learner;
- Courteous, client-focused and professional attitude;
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills;
- Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office and Legal Industry Software.
