As the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), and part of our Management Team, you will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day management and execution of effective financial management and financial reporting for the firm. As CFO, you will lead and oversee the financial operations, transactions, and reporting for the firm to ensure the Accounting Department maintains a high level of internal and external client focus and integrity. You will be an integral part of the Management Team and liaise with Partners on financial matters of the firm. You will be involved in various aspects of the business and projects that continue to advance the priorities of the firm. Key Responsibilities include:

  • Prepare and maintain financial reporting, analysis, accounting standards, policies, procedures and organizational enhancement to meet firm financial goals;
  • Engage the Finance Committee to develop short-, medium-, and long-term financial plans and projections and to execute on its mandate;
  • Coordinate the development and monitoring of budgets;
  • Analyze organizational performance against both the annual budget and firm’s long-term strategy and bring forward recommendations;
  • Ensure maintenance of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures, including but not limited to, Partnership contracts, agreements, and trust maintenance;
  • Coordinate and serve as a point of contact for external accounting reviews, tax advisors, and ensure proper maintenance of accounting records and documentation in accordance with firm policy and Law Society requirements;
  • Identify and implement improvement of accounting systems, policies and processes;
  • Oversee cash, investment, and asset management, banking relationships and arrangements; including covenants, and monitoring bank lines;
  • Prepare month-end and year-end financial statements;
  • Prepare and present financial results of the firm at certain partnership meetings;
  • Coordinate preparation of tax information for Partners along with external accounting firm;
  • Review month-end closing activities including general ledger maintenance, balance sheet reconciliations and cost allocations;
  • Serve as final point of escalation for Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable issues;
  • Oversee cash management, approve payables and execute cheque signing;
  • Oversee and monitor Work in Process (WIP), unbilled disbursements, Partner draws and lawyers’ dockets;
  • Oversee cash flow planning and ensure availability of funds, as required;
  • Actively engage in the implementation of new Accounting software and identification of technological solutions to automate financial transactions and processing;
  • Manage the firm’s insurance program through consultation with the firm’s brokers and designated Partner(s) of the firm;
  • Mentor and develop the Accounting team, managing work allocation, training, problem resolution, performance evaluation, and the building of an effective team dynamic;
  • Active participant in the Management Team’s efforts to promote client focus, collaboration, communication, organization, and high quality deliverables;
  • Other duties, as required.

The successful candidate ideally has the following qualifications:

  • Degree in Business Administration with a specialization in Accounting or related discipline combined with a CPA designation in good standing;
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in Accounting or Financial role with 5 years of progressive management experience;
  • Demonstrated strategic and operational leadership with proven ability to develop, implement and achieve strategic objectives;
  • Excellent attention to detail, interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills;
    Client-oriented with a high degree of professionalism;
  • Problem-solving mindset, finding better ways to do things with an emphasis on efficiency and effectiveness;
  • Experience in professional services considered an asset.
