Harrison Pensa Articling Students rally for JDRF
At Harrison Pensa, the firm is committed to giving back to our community. In that spirit, the Articling Students  led the way this year raising funds for the Sun Life Ride to Defeat Diabetes. The event is one that the firm has participated in for many years, and all funds raised go towards the fantastic research being conducted by scientists all over the world in the fight to find a cure for Juvenile, or Type 1, Diabetes.

This disease touches many people at the firm personally. For some, they suffer from it themselves, while for others, a close family member or friend has Diabetes. The universality of Juvenile Diabetes means that it is not challenging to galvanize people behind this cause, and 2022 was no exception.

JDRF fundraisers

This year, we featured two fun and interactive ways for individuals to both have fun and participate in giving. Firstly, we ran a “Jeans Day”. In exchange for $5, staff and lawyers were permitted to wear their jeans to work on a Wednesday, which was definitely outside of the norm. Many individuals gave more than $5, demonstrating the generous spirit in our workplace.

Secondly, we conducted a raffle. The firm was generous enough to donate several gift cards to Amazon and Starbucks, and local restaurant Joe Kools also donated gift certificates towards this noble cause. For $5, staff could enter a draw to win one of the prizes.

Each of the individual initiatives above raised over five hundred dollars. On top of that, many individuals donated to the firm’s fundraising initiative outside of Jeans Day and the Raffle. As a firm, we raised over $2,000 towards finding a cure, and while competition is not the point of this endeavor, I was very proud that we were one of the top corporate fundraisers in London for the 2022 Ride.

It was unfortunate that the ride itself remained virtual this year, with the only live ride in Ontario being conducted in Toronto. There is an avid cycling culture at the firm, and I am sure that once the ride returns to being conducted in person, Harrison Pensa will have no shortage of staff and lawyers willing to suit up and pedal for a great cause.

As someone who has a close family member living with Type 1 Diabetes, I can’t describe how much it meant to see people support and donate towards this cause. However, I wasn’t surprised. As I stated earlier, philanthropy is at the core of our firm’s mission, and so it gives me great pleasure to say that our firm’s fundraising drive for the 2022 Sun Life Ride to Defeat Diabetes was a smashing success!
