On behalf of HARRISON PENSA™ and the Articling Student Committee, we would like to welcome and introduce new Articling Students Matthew Bota, Arifa Serter, Kerri Marks, and Lauren Haberer to the firm.
Matthew Bota graduated with distinction from Western Law, and has two undergraduate degrees – one in History and one in Political Science – the second degree obtained by him while he was working full time in the insurance industry. He worked with State Farm Insurance for seven years where he honed his skills in client services. While a student, he worked in the Business Law Clinic, and placed first in the Harrison Pensa Contract Drafting Competition. He also worked as a legal researcher for Richard McLaren in the areas of secured transactions, commercial insolvency and alternative dispute resolution. Matthew’s community and extracurricular activities are impressive, including his participation in numerous moots, negotiation competitions, community charity events, Speaker of the Western Law Student Legal Society, and membership and leadership in London area politics.
Arifa Serter completed her law degree at the University of Ottawa, and has an undergraduate degree in Family Studies and Criminology from Western. She worked in New York City at NPZ Law Group as a Canadian immigration legal assistant preparing research memos and assembling the necessary evidence for various permits, visa and applications. She also worked at the University of Ottawa Legal Clinic in the Family Law department. She honed her business development skills by expanding both NPZ Law Group’s client base and the Legal Clinic’s base of clients through leading workshops, presentations and various outreach initiatives. Arifa was a T.A. in the Alternative Dispute Resolution Course, and worked as a personal support worker during her school years in London for people with disabilities. She was also an English Teacher and journalist in Turkey. She speaks fluent Turkish and is proficient in the Bosnian/Serbian languages as well.
Kerri Marks graduated from Western Law and the Ivey Business program. She worked as both a Case Worker and Case Manager at the Western Business Law Clinic and previously worked at a media agency where she provided business support in the form of analytics on their ROI and process improvement. She completed various workshops on professionalism, contract drafting and small businesses, and took part in the Western Law client consultation competition. She has participated in innumerable extracurricular activities and volunteer initiatives, including Orientation Student Leader for Western Law, member on the Western Law Community Outreach Committee, Ivey Yearbook Committee, and UWO Habitat for Humanity. She also completed a Tough Mudder event and was a team leader in 2013. In her spare time, Kerri enjoys running and photography.
Lauren Haberer graduated from Queen’s Law and has a degree in Political Science from the University of Ottawa. While living in Ottawa, Lauren held positions with the federal government in eCommunications and Parliamentary and Cabinet Affairs. During law school, Lauren was a Director of Communications for the Queen’s Law newspaper and was an associate editor with the Queen’s Law Journal. Lauren is originally from Zurich and enjoys sports, board games and travelling in her spare time.
