Steven J. Atkinson

Steven J. Atkinson is a lawyer and partner with Harrison Pensa’s Litigation and Dispute Resolution Group. He serves large insurance companies, corporations of all sizes, and individuals, focusing his practice on insurance defence, commercial litigation, and mediation. Whatever the case or whoever the client, Steve prides himself on his personal involvement in and commitment to his clients, understanding their needs, and advancing their interests.
Steve’s insurance company clients do business right across Canada, in sectors ranging from home, auto and commercial general liability to “course of construction,” marine, and professional negligence matters. Car and boat accidents, slip-and-falls, defective products, and faulty construction are just some of the cases he tackles. Not ony does Steve defend lawsuits brought against his insurance clients or their policyholders, but he also undertakes subrogated claims to recover compensation for insurance companies that covered the costs of someone else’s negligence.
Steve also serves many individual clients who have sustained injuries or losses (including the loss of a spouse) and who are trying to recover damages. He uses his extensive experience with insurance litigation to guide them through the often difficult process of obtaining the compensation to which they are entitled. Steve knows that injured individuals don’t just require monetary compensation; they also need someone to listen to them, who understands and respects what they have gone through, and who helps them achieve a sense of closure following their loss.
Steve is also active in mediation and is frequently hired by other lawyers representing insurance companies or individuals to help them resolve their claims. He uses his training as a mediator with the Harvard Negotiation Institute to help these parties engage in alternative methods of dispute resolution. He is a member of the Middlesex Law Association, the Canadian Bar Association, the Canadian Defence Lawyers Association, and the American Defence Research Institute.
Steve has been a member of Harrison Pensa’s Partnership Board since 2008 and is active in the management of the firm. In addition to his home and family, Steve has a strong interest in cars, boats and Seadoos, and will happily get under the hood of one anytime.
